The Odyssey is without a doubt, one of the most legendary stories ever made. A story of adventure, love, family, morality and, the Gods. It hits all the major tropes featured in everyday story telling, all while giving us a glimpse into the history of Greece, and the beginning of Western philosophy and literature.
This year legendary film director Christopher Nolan decided to take on the challenge and release this historical epic in cinemas near you. The anticipation for the film was electric, a buzz always came knocking at every cinephiles door when Nolan is mentioned.
Then the first trailer was released, and the floodgates opened.
Nolan is arguably one of the greatest directors of the 21st century. Although I have other preferences to my favourite director, a conversation for another time, he has one of the greatest catalogs known to cinema. From the Sci-Fi giants like ‘Interstellar’, to the suspenseful war film ‘Dunkirk’, and the epic Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan has done it all.
Watching his career with interest, it was only a matter of time until he tackled a historical epic. Having completed the superhero genre, the Sci-Fi genre and the biopic, there was only one place for him left to go… The Odyseey.
Trailer one dropped in December 2025, and it was underwhelming to say the least.
A lifeless, airbrushed, and rather dull trailer that led the controversial critics to new territories of complaints.
At this stage, the complaint were simple, the armour looks stupid, its historically inaccurate, Tom Holland is to old to play Telemachus, Matt Damon was a poor choice for Odysseus, the Cyclops looks ridiculous. All very, surface level complaints, some with standing, others without.
Then came the second trailer, and the casting list release. And all hell broke loose.
Zendaya as Athena
Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy
Himesh Patel as Eurylochus
Travis Scott as someone
Elliot Page is even rumoured to play the legendary warrior Achilles.
The list goes on.
The internet blew up, and rage surged across every Reddit page dedicated to Nolan, every comment section of the trailers, every Instagram page dedicated to cinema. No where was safe, as AI videos of Elliot page dressed in Brad Pitts, Troy armour plastered screens.
What is my take on all this drama?
I think Helen of Troy should probably look Greek, and not Zimbabwean. I think Tom Holland is too old and the role should have been gifted to a new, up and coming actor. I think Zendaya as Athena isn’t lore accurate. I think man with South Asian heritage playing the commander of a Greek fleet is dumb as hell. Elliot Page as Achilles is by far the worst move I have seen in casting ever, being edgy isn’t art.
Could it still be a good film? I’m not so sure.
The reason why I think Helen of Troy should at least look European, stretches past the argument of who this story belong to. To me, it just doesn’t make sense. Why is a central African lady, the princess of a Greek City? It breaks reality. Imagine if you will, and it has been done many times, a story about a indigenous tribe in the planes of the West and the rival chiefs daughter was a Chinese person.
It would completely rupture the films integrity. Why on earth is there are Chinese person in a tribal camp in the Midwest of the United States? How did she become a person of high stature? Why are there no other Chinese people there?
It breaks the fourth wall and makes the audience ask questions that don’t correlate to the film or story.
Tom Holland, well… the guy is 30, playing a 19-20 year old. I’m bored of seeing his face, and I think this should have been a gift given to someone new. Besides that, whatever I guess.
A Indian man playing a Greek sailor captain is ridiculous and once again brings us out of the story to ask more questions about how he got there? Why is he a captain of the Greek armada?
If Elliot Page is Achilles, I mean, its a clear political plant that was decided by a board of executives in an attempt to piss everyone off and to sell more tickets and create hysteria and therefore publicity.
It reminds me of what my dad used to say about Alice Cooper. He was controversial and weird and one of the first to wear make-up and preform theatrics along side his concerts. The controversy behind him, sold more tickets and marketed his tours more so than anything else. The more shocking the claim, the more people talk about it.
Elliot Page is a marketing plant, that helps promote the film and keep it relevant and in the mind of the populous.
To break it down simply. I think this movie is a obvious, sinister play by a dark group of Hollywood globalists that think they can take the biggest dump on Western culture as possible by targeting its foundational text.
Not only are they going to race swap characters in an attempt to colonise western culture disguising their sinister acts as inclusivity and progressiveness. They are also attempting to represent the most masculine of Western men, the embodiment of heroism and masculinity, Achilles as transgender twink that weighs less than a 13 year old boy. Once again, using buzz word progressive ideologies and terms to disarm any form of criticism.
“Racist”, “Transphobic” or “Bigoted”. The terms weaponised by globalists and liberals in an attempt to disarm anyone wanting segregated cultures.
One more thing, something I think is widely ignored by cinephiles and critics of segregated cultures. Why can’t we have films about black history? Why can’t we have a transgender story? or a story about black women? Why are we always subjected to lazy, race and gender swapping, rather than telling the stories of African warlords, or epic tales from the jungles of the Congo?
There are thousands of cultures across the world, all with interesting and unique stories that need to be told. Why do you think Hollywood executives decided to put black and brown people in white stories? It’s because they are too lazy, and potentially racist to give black and brown people their own place in Hollywood.
If I saw a trailer, by a black director like Jordan Pee, Spike Lee, or someone new, about Mansa Musa, or Nyami Nyami the God of the Zambezi river, or Zulu’s and their bravery against colonialism, or Black Caesar a legendary pirate. I would be over the moon to watch it.
If an Indian director came forward, and wanted to make colourful stories of their ancient and proud land. I would que up to see them.
No need for white faces, no need for inclusivity. Hell, I’ll watch it with subtitles, like I do with some Japanese film and Koreas film. Why is inclusivity always in white film?
Anyway, finishing up. I’ll more than likely not watch Odyssey. I think it looks kind of bad even without the controversy, plus I don’t want to fund anymore of this Hollywood shock factor sales tactics.
