Who shall we die for?

Will I have to die, for the incompetence of my government?

It’s a question I think we should all have on our minds now. Will I be a weapon for my government, and who will I be killed by? Who will I be forced to kill, is an equally important question.

We can sit and look back over the playbook of history and feel deeply for those that went to foreign shores to defend the liberties we have today.

All those lives, lost, some needlessly, some as a great sacrifice to the betterment of human civilization. The majority of those where conscripted or pressed into the military.

We now approach a war, one of mass destruction and unprecedented scale, and I am 31, relatively fit and healthy. Ripe for the picking.

After years of government failures, scandals, and corruption, who will I be dying for? and would it be better to be lined up against a wall and executed for ‘cowardice’?

Some of you might think I am being dramatic, and perhaps I am… but something tells me that the conversation needs to be had. Do we die, by the hands of an enemy? Kill in the name of our nation, one that continues to fail us, time and time again? or die knowing they couldn’t have our lives?

If the Second World War happened today, would I go knowing what this country would turn into? I’m not sure.

Not only has our political system completely failed the working people of the United Kingdom. War itself is far more terrifying than it every has been, specially with the invention of drones.

Warfare has always been brutal, cruel and pitiful, but this new age of technological advancement and console killers there is something more sinister and aliens to it. At least back in the Second World War, the ability of ones survival was somewhat in the hands of a solider.

I don’t want to kill someone, I never have, and that doesn’t make me special I know, most people don’t. However, in this day of mass propaganda, contorted news channels, and corrupted politicians, why should I kill Mohammad, or Yosef, or Smirnov, or Chin Hoe.

Who should I believe? The Media? The politicians? As George Orwell once said “In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act”.

Shall we die stood on our own feet, looking down the barrel of a fellow Brit? Or on some foreign field in the service of our political leaders?

I pray that the world will fix itself, that we find the balance of the 1990s, and the temperament of the 2010s.

Lets hope, non of this shall come to pass, but should it, I pray I make the right choice.
