Who is the fictional character you relate to the most?

When this subject comes up in heavy drinking sessions or long travel journeys, a lot of people go for great heroes, or troubled edgy villains. And so they should, after all that’s why we watch them. We can see ourselves in the biggest tragedy, and within every warrior hero.

For me, I see myself in the more mundane and trodden on characters, and for me, no one quiet hits the ordinary, hardworking, goofy, likeable, but unliked by the harsh world, than Peter Parker. Specifically, Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker.

I don’t include Toby’s superhero alter-ego Spiderman in this, even though the wall crawling, tight suit wearing hero just has a enhanced version of Peters own story.

Peter is kind, and dorky. He has a crush on a girl he thinks is out of his league. He has a job delivering pizza, and amateur photographer but is a scientific genius . He is surrounded by rich, entitled people with more money than he could ever imagine. His parents, are assumed dead, and he lives with his Uncle and Aunty.

My parents are alive and well, and I do not live with my Uncle and Aunty.

However, I am a dork, I consider myself a kind person in a cruel world. I have a job, but my skill set is found elsewhere. Not sure I relate to the geniuses of Peter Parker that’s for sure. I am often surrounded by the rich and entitled, and they all seem to look down the common folk, even those that were once the common folk.

Sometimes the world and great stories don’t need valiant heroes, they just need people.
