In recent years, violent crime has become an ever-growing concern across our streets. This week’s tragic mass stabbing is yet another reminder that too many people in our communities remain vulnerable to senseless violence.
Like many others, I have friends and family members who feel unsafe when walking alone. Everyone deserves the right to protect themselves from harm.
According to official statistics, around 47,000 offences involving sharp instruments were recorded last year—a slight 6% decrease from the year before, but still an unacceptably high figure. When the 1986 Firearms Act made pepper spray illegal, there were roughly 5,000 knife crimes reported. Since then, knife-related offences have increased by almost 1,000%. Clearly, the existing laws have not deterred violent crime.
Pepper spray is a non-lethal deterrent designed to give victims a chance to escape and de-escalate potentially life-threatening situations. It is not a weapon of aggression, but a tool of protection.
I am calling for measured reform—not unrestricted access. I believe pepper spray should be:
- Available only to individuals over 18 years old
- Licensed and subject to background checks
- Used only by those who have completed professional training
By implementing such safeguards, we can empower law-abiding citizens to defend themselves responsibly, while maintaining public safety.
It is time to reform our self-defence laws to reflect the realities of modern crime and give people a means to protect themselves without resorting to lethal force.
