Just before Christmas, on the 11th of December, I started to write a new blog post called 90 seconds till midnight… Doomsday approaches. We are now at 89 seconds, meaning that in the last two months we have stepped a second closer to complete annihilation through all out war, global environmental disaster or economic or social collapse.
The Doomsday clock is a symbolic clock that ‘a board of scientists’ use to determine how close we are to that fateful day. These scientists come from a wide range of backgrounds and areas of study. For example there is a professor of diplomacy, a Nobel prize winner in physics, a UN high representative of disarmament and a chemistry and environmental experts.
Unlike most clocks, and time itself, this one can go back. In 1995 the clock went back almost 4 minuets. In 2010 the clock went back 2 minuets. Meaning there is hope, this isn’t a one way system. At least so we are told
But here we are, in the second month of 2025 and we are seconds, 89 seconds to be exact, from the midnight chime. What will cause this chime on humanities clock is yet to be known. Some speculate nuclear war, others economic collapse. Personally, I believe there is not one sin gular crisis that will cause our destruction. But if I had to put my chips down on this apocalyptic bet, I’d go all in on the destruction of our environment being the main cause or driving force behind all the above.
With President Trump at the wheel, a man who believes that the warnings of environmental destruction are ‘fake news’. We have signed our deal with destruction.
It is my opinion that the election of Donald J. Trump was the single most important election of all time. With his black mark upon the executive order to leave the Paris agreement. I think we may have just sealed our fate.
Now, I don’t know enough about American politics to vouch my opinion on Trump VS Harris, Biden VS Trump or whoever sits on the mantel of the ‘free world’. Yet, I understand that the world we live in today, is operated on trade and production of good. China, does not care about the environment, neither does India or Russia. It is clear that this movement away from the Paris agreement by Trump is a way to get back on the industrial race and not get left behind.
I’m no scientist, I am just a guy who talks a lot and writes about half as much, but it is my opinion that the environment is the cause for almost everything throughout our history. We are the environment we live in. Cultures, agriculture, religion, industrialisation, war, politics and everything in between is linked to the space we live in. The Annals, a group of historians from France, believe this to be true also.
They believe that societies that live in the mountains do not develop the same way as those by the sea. Neither those in deserts the same as those with lush farming land at their disposal.
Environment drives agriculture, agriculture drives health and prosperity, and the list goes on and on.
With the collapse of the environment, it is easy then to suspect that the collapse of everything built by it will also crumble.
Conclusion.
It is my opinion, a rather uneducated one and somewhat out of my field of expertise, we are doomed. Now, I don’t mean to be a doomer, or whatever the kids want to called me these days. But, we have ignored the climate crises to such an extent that I believe that we have shortened the existence of homo-sapiens by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years.
I fear for the generations below mine, for I believe they will see unspeakable horrors.
