What went down.
I am sure you have all heard by now, or seen, the devastating lack of diplomacy that took place and the White House yesterday. If not, let me put it into a quick synopsis:
That meeting started very civil, Trump welcomed Zelenski with high praise of the Ukraine’s military bravery, the bravery of his generals and of Zelenski himself. He talked about the minerals that the US was looking to take from Ukrainian soil as a back payment of the financial and military support from the last 3 years.
Trump had the opportunity to defecate on the Biden administration and did so as he always does with the smallest of opportunities presented to him. Stating that ‘the war would never have happened if I was in power’. Well, you weren’t in power, so we will never know the truth of that will we?
Anyway, Zelenski’s opening was, in all honesty, poor. He clearly didn’t have time for the same niceties and formalities that Trump had. He was more interested in getting to the subject at hand. Of course he thanked the president for granting him and audience and for his support. But it didn’t have the same flare as Trump’s welcoming.
To me, that doesn’t really matter. The most important part of this is saving lives, and protecting Ukrainian sovereignty. Formalities are for TV, and for PR diplomacy. So I don’t think there is any fault in Zelenski’s approach, only it didn’t look good to the cameras.
Zelenski went on talking about children being captured by the Russian soldiers, he revealed to president Trump pictures of soldiers after their imprisonment from the Russian prisons. Evidence of Russia’s war-crimes.
It was, an awkward start to say the least.
The rest of the meeting was, less awkward more cringe. Trump took every opportunity to shoot down the Biden administration while blurting out how America has the best this, the most of this, and the greatest of that… It was a devastating show of Trumps familiar rhetoric.
JD Vance’s history lesson.

The altercation began because JD Vance was missing out on all the fun. He reminded me of a kid, who wanted to show off his toys on someone else’s Birthday. He blurted out a very quick, and pointless line, that no one really asked for. About how the Biden administration was the blame for no deal and how Trump was doing diplomacy by engaging in conversation with Zelenski and trying to find a deal.
Right, or wrong the outburst was… unnecessary.
Zelenski went on to provide a history lesson for JD, explaining how there had been three presidents since the 2014 invasion of Crimea.
Trump, randomly interjected in this part of Zelenski’s history lesson. By saying “2015, 2015”. He was quickly shot down by both Zelenski and JD who reminded the president that no, it was 2014. “I was not here” was his joke after this strange interjection. To which the media laughed.
Zelenski continued his history lesson, reminding JD of the ceasefire that Russia broke. How Russia didn’t exchange prisoners as agreed as part of the ceasefire in 2019.
“What kind of diplomacy JD are you speaking about? What do you mean?”
It was clear to me, while watching the full interview that this was going to head to disaster. Trump’s comments about Zelenski being a dictator earlier in the month was lingering in the Oval office like a dark smog. Yet, JD was not the person I thought would start this blaze.
JD Vance – Fire starter.

JD then went on the attack. He has been challenged by Zelenski in from of the media and his pride was not gonna have it.
“I think it’s disrespectful to come into the Oval office and try and litigate this in front of the American media”.
Basically, JD was upset that Zelenski made him look like a fool in front of the American people.
JD, continued the attack by stating how there was man power issues within the Ukrainian military and how Zelensky should be thanking the president for the support he has shown. JD was the first to raise his voice, as those that have smaller ego’s often do. He yelled at Zelensky
“DO YOU THINK IT IS RESPECTFUL TO COME TO THE OVAL OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES AND ATTACK THE ADMINISTRATION THAT IS TRYING TO PREVENT THE DESTRUCTION OF YOUR COUNTRY”.
Zelensky, tries to calm the tension, “there’s a lot of question lets start from the beginning”.
Zelensky started by saying “everybody have problems, even you, but you have nice ocean and don’t feel now, but you will feel it in the future”
This is when Trump decided to chip in. Because Trump can not hear a negative comment about his administration without loosing his mind. Trump can not fathom a negative comment about ‘his’ America.
“You don’t know that. Don’t tell us what we are going to feel” – Trump
Trump’s use of the word ‘dictate’ was telling. He had not forgotten what he said about Zelensky, and he was doubling down on it.
“You are in no position to dictate what we are going to feel”
“We are going to feel very good and very strong” again with the positive enforcement. If there was a fire in Trumps house, he’ll attempt to tell the fire that the house was made of water.
All hell breaks loose.
Trump and Zelensky go head to head.
“You don’t have the cards right now…”
A threat. Trump’s you don’t have the cards right now was a threat to abandon Ukraine and leave them to their fate. Trump’s bully tactics here are transparent. He is willing to throw Ukraine under the Russian war machine unless Zelensky does what he says.
Zelensky’s ‘cards’ shouldn’t be natural resources or signing away land to the Russian’s for peace. Zelensky’s card is the fact Russia invaded a democratic and sovereign country for the purpose of gaining territory. That should be enough to have the support of the president of the United States.
Of course, I don’t think the Ukraine is all sunshine and rainbows. I think their decision to try and join NATO is foolish and an attempt to poke the bear. I think that the money that is going to the Ukrainian military and its infrastructure needs to be closely watched and I do think that there should be streamlined economic restrictions on where this aid goes.
But, for Trump to bully Zelensky live on TV. To almost blackmail him into doing as he is told is another dark mark on Trumps record.
“You are gambling with World War 3”
No Trump, you are allowing a invading country to become the victim. Russia, is gambling with World War 3, Russia invaded the Ukraine, Russia has used the threat of nuclear war. Russia is gambling with the lives of millions, perhaps billions for gaining territory it hasn’t possessed in 35 years.
I understand the frustration of the American people, we here in the UK are no happy about sending the Ukraine money and military equipment. However, we do not, for a moment pretend that this war was started by Ukraine, nor do we blame Ukraine for it.
JD weighs back in with some useless rhetoric about Zelensky campaigning against Trump in the recent election. How Zelensky was taking sides against Trump and advocating for Biden.
Trump got into power. He is sat in the Oval office while this conversation is happening. So why does it matter if Zelensky did want Biden to win. His country, the East of Europe is at threat and you are playing, he said, she said. It’s the most childish argument I have ever seen in politics.
Trump and JD have opened my eyes to how far politics has fallen. It is nothing but a playground dispute, except there are millions of lives at risk and there is no headteacher to prevent catastrophe.
“Obama gave you sheets, I gave you Javelins to take out tanks”… Trumps ego, his want to be remembered as a good president clouds his mind, more than any other strange quirk he has picked up over the years.
Diplomatic failure.
Watch below how the worlds super power bullies a sovereign nation for being invaded and not saying thank you enough…
