I am making a documentary… and it’s actually going well.

Fifteen of my MA course mates are travelling down to London on the 26th of October to document the Tommy Robinson rally that is taking place outside Downing Street. Our aim, is to create a documentary on the about the growing political polarisation in the United Kingdom. Our aim however, is not to push an agenda, rather it is to highlight the clear growing issue of political extremism, on both the left and the right.

We have secured interviews, equipment, and transport. We have five teams of talented students working across the board from editing, script writing, context and question research, each adding their own flare to the project. Each, with vital skills that will help make this project a great venture for us all.

Here is the U.K, we are experience the destruction of reason. While it important that each side of the political spectrum has its say, from the extreme right, to the extreme left. As a society we are seeing more and more violent and pointless protest. The left have weaponised language to their advantage, and the right are continuing to push racist remarks and hatred. How do we solve this issue? I don’t know, but what I do know, as a student of history, is that soon there will be greater consequences for this polarisation.

It is natural for ideologies to be pushed further and further from each other, only for new ideologies to creep in and set new president for reason. However, with the works of social media, mass production and distribution of ideologies and growing populations we are not giving enough time for middle ground thought to find a foothold, before we are exposed to the next issue.

What I mean by this, can be seen throughout history. New, and improved technologies usually come from times of extreme circumstance. Lets look at the media field, plastic surgery, X-ray, blood transfusion and much more came into existence due to world wars. Computers, and other life changing technologies were developed to combat the Nazi’s.

This is the same as ideologies. Most come from growing tension, and result in war. But what if war is no longer an option, what if we develop a bomb large and scary enough to prevent large scale conflicts to ever resurface? These ideologies keep growing, unchecked and unchallenged.

This is why we are where we are today in the U.K and this is what my documentary is about.
