Two days ago, on the 29th of July. A boy, aged 17. Walked into a Taylor Swift dance event and stabbed upwards of 9 people. Killing three children, Bebe King aged six, Elsie Dot Stancombe aged seven and Alice Dasilva Aguiar aged 9.
There are no words to describe the pain that has been caused by this senseless, barbaric and inhuman attack. The families are in the thoughts of everyone as the nation mourns the passing of three beautiful children.
In times like these it’s hard not answer such crimes with hate, with vengeance and anger. It’s hard to see how this senseless act can be met with anything but emotional hostility. Yet it is in these times we must console those directly affected. To stand shoulder to shoulder with the parents, siblings, family members and friends, letting them know support and love is there.
At a time when humility should be priority however, politics always comes into play. News headlines use the blood of children and innocence to push their agenda into the masses. And in our heartbreak, we seek answers through blurred lines and half truths supplied by them.
The riot instigated following the brutal attack hijacked the mourning process of Southport. While the news outlets are insisting on blaming right winged groups such as the EDL (English Defence League) there is yet to be any sufficient evidence of this.
I expect there were members of the EDL at the riot, if not, there were definitely right wing individuals involved adding fuel to an already scorching blaze of anger and pain. Among the potential EDL and right winged groups were ordinary men and woman blinded by betrayal and sadness.
While we can take a stance on this politically, the bottom line is three children were murdered in cold blood, others fighting for their lives in hospital. All of which were just trying to enjoy their summer break from school with some dancing and bracelet making.
On a personal note, this is by far the most heinous criminal act of pointless violent crime witnessed in the UK since the Plymouth shooting. I mourn over this event more than any I have witnessed in my lifetime and I struggle to keep back tears of sadness and anger.
